After spending the last month trying out EL34, KT77 and 6L6 power tubes in my Laney GH100L. I've decided to stick with SED Winged C 6L6 tubes. They just have that chunky low end I love and the clean up really well when rolling back the volume.

After so many dissapointments and a shoulder injury I thought my guitar playing days were over.Then bizarrely one morning I am having two parallel conversations about a band project. A southern rock/metal influenced affair which was right up my street. Within a couple of weeks everything fell into place and we had written a track!

The band is Blackdown and the song Blame Train. 

I'm back enjoying what I do best. Playing loud guitar!

I had never noticed that I hold my pick differently to most guitarist until it was pointed out to me 4 years ago.
I seem to lock my thumb and angle the pick backwards. It works for me and it seems I'm in good company. Chris Poland, Jesper Stromblad, Carlos Santana, George Benson and Shawn Lane to name but a few hold their picks like this. Paul Gilbert also held his pick in a similar way until he "corrected" it early on in his career.
It's done me no harm whatsoever.

After trying every guitar pick known to man (or woman) in the last 28 years I've settled on Jazztone 208's and Dunlop Delrin 1.5mm. I have been using the Jazztone 208 on and off for 10 yrs. A close second was the 2mm Big Stubby. The only thing that let the Big Stubby down was the excessive wear. If it was made of Ultex it would be my number one.
During the 80's and 90's I used either metal or Tortex picks but as I got older I started to get "picky". I started to analyse my technique to see if I could make improvements. I never realised it until about 7 years ago that I hold my pick arse about face ie; I angle backwards rather than forwards. Shawn Lane,Chris Poland and Jesper Stromblad are fine examples of this "wonky" picking grip.
So with this in mind I went in search of a pick for my needs. Fast chunky rhythms and ascending across string runs. I have always descended legato style and I am happy with that.The Red Bears,Ultex,Fangs,Cool,V's and even thumb picks all came and went with no joy. I stumbled across the Jazztone's by pure chance and the Delrin's have always been in my pick box but never been used. The Jazztone 208 is about the size of a Jazz III XL but much thicker with rounded edges for superior release. I found out this a while back that shredder Andy James now uses the 208.

With all the hype about Jazz III picks I thought I would give them a go. However much effort I put into these picks the love just wasn't there. Even the larger XL failed to impress. The Dunlop Jazztone 208, Delrin's and even Planet Waves Black Ice are far better for my needs and are worthy alternatives to the Dunlop Jazz III's.

 

So my word of advice is try every pick you can lay your hands on. Don't get caught up in what everybody else is using. Play and use what suits your needs. The same goes for anything guitar related.
